June Devotion Growing in Knowledge “Those who know your name will trust in you…” Psalm 9:10
|
Hello Beloved!
Well, we have spent the last two months discussing the first key to being whole in a broken
world, and that is knowledge. What have we learned?
First, we learned that as our knowledge of God’s character grows, so does our ability trust
Him with our lives…which in turn causes our love for Him to grow.
Second, we learned that knowing who we are in Christ is essential for living a life a faith.
Understanding who we are as a child of God equips us to survive and thrive in this world
making us a light to others. It is key to living the abundant life that Jesus talked about.
Scripture encourages us to grow in knowledge…Proverbs 18:15 says this…
“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.”
Over and over again Why? The answer is found in Hosea 4:6
“…my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”
We can so easily be lead astray if we don’t know the truth. If we don’t know that God is
good and has a good plan for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11) then when how will we react when
hard times fall upon us? If we don’t know that we are a new creation in Christ and forgiven
(2 Corinthians 5:17) then what happens when we mess up and the enemy whispers in our ear,
“You’re no different!” Beloved, if we don’t know the truth, if we don’t know God’s promises
and His word, then we are in danger. God’s truth defeats every lie, gives us encouragement,
and give us the strength to live this life and fight the good fight of faith. So how do we gain
knowledge? Let’s look at Proverbs 2:1-6:
“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to
wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry
aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden
treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For
the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth com knowledge and understanding.”
From this passage we find the keys to gaining knowledge.
1. We begin by with the fear of the Lord, which means to respect Him and who He is.
Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge. So we start we
respecting God.
2. When we respect someone we will listen to what they have to say. So the second step is to
listen, accept and store up His words. How? By reading His love letter, the Bible. He has so
much to say to us, and all we have to do is open up the book, pray and ask Him to teach us,
and then trust that He will honor our commitment to grow and learn. Jeremiah 33:3 says
this…
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not
know.”
I never tire of reading His word. The more I spend time reading and soaking in His words,
the more I want to know. You have all read a novel that you can’t put down. Well, the Bible
can be like too. For me it didn’t start like that…honestly, it happened over time, but I have
cultivated a love for His word. It is where He meets me; it where He encourages me. It is
where He says He loves me.
3. Finally, as you read you will notice that you will want to know more about
different things. You will find yourself digging and searching as if you were looking for
treasure…I can tell you as I dig and search for deeper truths, there is always treasure. I find
myself wanting to know what God has to say about love, or discipline, or children. God
always rewards my searching…not always immediately, but He does show me wonderful
things by giving me insight and wisdom and He will do the same for you.
Now, there is something else you need to know about Knowledge. And I think I will save
that for next month. I pray that you have been encouraged to open your treasure trove, the
Bible, and learn about the Lord. Seeking Him is the key to growing your relationship. No
matter how long you have been a believer there is always more to learn, and more growing to
do. Scripture will always speak to you differently because it is alive and active (Hebrews 4:
12). Next month I’ll be teaching on the importance of balancing our knowledge with love.
Until then, I pray that you may be encouraged in heart so that you may “…know the
mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and
knowledge.”
In Jesus most precious name, Amen.
Love you guys,
CJ
